    Authentic Buenos Aires

    • 3-nights from Buenos Aires, Argentina
    • Available as a Pre- and Post-Cruise Land Program

Begin your exploration by heading out for some choripan, a perfect combination of bread and chorizo, with perhaps a glass of Torrontés, the only wine variety native to Argentina. Venturing outside the city brings a truly unique experience that harkens back to legends of the Spanish-American wars of independence. You’ll travel to the countryside outside of Buenos Aires and be hosted by the owners of a traditional estancia ranch that’s home to the gaucho, the ‘cowboys of Argentina’. With tales of yesteryear hanging in the air, you’ll be served a hearty lunch of grilled meats with empanadas washed down by a selection of fine Argentinean wines. Sit back and enjoy folk songs and dances before being privy to a demonstration of impeccable horse-riding skills and the indomitable spirit of the gaucho. To ensure you experience its cosmopolitan charm, a half-day sightseeing tour of Buenos Aires will immerse you even further. You’ll get off to a technicolor start in La Boca, a phenomenally vibrant neighbourhood centred around El Caminito, where cobblestones and rainbow colours make it an open-air museum of sorts. After passing the elaborately adorned Metropolitan Cathedral you’ll come upon Casa Rosado, the pink-tinted presidential palace from which Argentine president Juan Perón and his wife Eva, better known as Evita, addressed their devoted throngs in the late 1940s and early ’50s. While exploring the affluent neighbourhood of La Recoleta you’ll pay a visit to Café Tortoni, a Buenos Aires landmark since 1858. Later in the evening, you’ll be dazzled by an authentic tango performance over dinner. Regardless of your fluency in Spanish, you won’t need to speak the language to feel tango’s universal passion. Hotel Accommodations, transfers, select meals and tours included.

    A Passion for Rio

    • 3-nights from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
    • Available as a Pre- and Post-Cruise Land Program

To begin, get a feel for the rhythm of Rio and perhaps a taste of authentic Brazilian picanha (barbecued meat). One of your days will take you into the heart of Rio’s historic downtown area. Few buildings live up to their names quite like Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava’s Tomorrow’s Museum. It’s one of many structural gems you’ll admire on a tour of Rio’s intriguing architecture that includes the imposing Metropolitan Cathedral, gorgeous Saint Bento Monastery, and spectacular Opera House. Few can resist the call of Rio’s celebrated beaches, and you’ll be free to explore on your own as the late-afternoon sun makes the sand glow and the city starts to sway. During another day of exploration, you’ll drive to Praia Vermelha for a cable-car ride to Sugarloaf Mountain, a 1,300-foot granite and quartz peak named for its resemblance to sugar that was shaped into loaves for transport in the 19th century. The two-stage ride stops at the lush, fragrant gardens and scenic lookouts of Urca Hill. It continues to the very top of Sugarloaf, 1,300 feet above sea level, where the brave are rewarded with mesmerizing views of the mouth of Guanabara Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, densely vegetated mountains, and, of course, magnificent Rio itself. Regardless of how far up Sugarloaf you travelled, a typical Brazilian BBQ lunch will be served to all before the return to downtown Rio. You’ll visit a samba school for a backstage look at what goes into the creation of the lavish costumes and colorful floats featured in Rio’s famed Carnival. Hotel Accommodations, transfers, select meals and tours included.

Featured Voyage - Bold Flavours of Brazil & Beyond:

    Day 1: Rio de Janeiro

There’s a little bit of Carnival celebrated here everyday. From its famous beaches to its iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer, Rio radiates an air of exuberance that is hard to find anywhere else. Make the scene on trendy Ipanema or take a cable car to the summit of Sugar Loaf Mountain and enjoy the amazing views. Sway your hips to the rhythm at a samba show or enjoy the tranquility of king Dom João VI’s Botanical Gardens and verdant Tijuca Forest.

    Day 2: Búzios

The tiny fishing village of Búzios, just 105 miles from Rio de Janeiro, is considered one of the ten most beautiful spots in the world. The village burst into prominence when French actress Brigitte Bardot visited here in her heyday (there’s a statue of her looking out to sea on the Orla Bardot). Today, this once sleepy village is an international resort -- St. Tropez, with a unique Brazilian beat. Búzios offers some of South America’s most attractive beaches. Indeed, you could lounge on one magnificent beach each hour of the day, sipping a delicious caipirinhas of course.

    Day 3: Ilha Grande

Some of Brazil's most gorgeous beaches and exotic rainforests can be found 120 miles south of Rio de Janeiro on the Ilha Grande. Ilha Grande boasts over 200 beaches and historically was a pirates hideaway. Enjoy exploring this beautiful island hiking its trails, kayaking, snorkeling, diving to spectacular sites or simply relaxing on its gorgeous beaches. Savor the dense Atlantic forest, the birds, flowers, iguanas, monkeys and myriad wildlife found in this protected reserve. Please be advised that due to the under-developed nature of this destination, organized tours are not available.

    Day 4: Parati

Savor this gem of a historic town with its beautifully preserved Portuguese colonial architecture, charming narrow streets, imposing fort and exquisite churches. Enjoy a leisurely schooner cruise through this group of lush islands past quaint fishing villages and pristine beaches. Stop at a beach to swim, snorkel or just relax. Look for handmade clothing and local artwork. Indulge in fresh seafood at a seaside cafe.

    Day 5: São Paulo

“A healthy and fresh land and good waters" is how the first Jesuit priests who crossed the Serra do Mar mountains in 1553 described the area that would become the largest and wealthiest city in South America. Explore the old and the new downtown sections, the Cathedral of São Paulo, the Oriental District, the Higienopolis District, and Pacaembu Stadium. Nearby Santos, the port-of-call, is a holiday resort with magnificent beaches and the lovely Orchid Gardens.

    Day 6: Porto Belo

Discover the quaint fishing village charm and lively beach atmosphere of Porto Belo, tucked at the base of lush mountains on a sparkling emerald bay. Take a few moments to peruse the wharf shops before shuttling off to the main square in downtown Porto Belo. Look for unique Brazilian beachwear, jewelry and hand carved wooden art pieces. Enjoy a tour of the area. Then, visit Quatros Ilhas Beach to enjoy fresh seafood, shrimp, and the famous Caipirinha made from Brazil’s sugar cane liquor, cachaca at a beachside café. Relax to the soft whisper of the waves in this beach lover’s paradise.

    Day 7: At Sea

    Day 8: Rio Grande

Explore this lovely old Portuguese city, its gracious squares and beautiful churches. Visit the Museum of Sacred Art and the fascinating Oceanographic Museum. Or see the vast pampas and feel the gaucho life on a local estancia.

    Photo: Punta del Este

    Day 9: Punta del Este

Spend the day enjoying this beautiful, chic beach resort, its marinas, museums and fascinating shops. Or venture into the equally picturesque countryside and visit a cattle station. Take a trip to Sea Wolves Island and view a colony of endangered sea lions and seals. Visit the 18th-century city of Maldonado with its many enchanting buildings, cathedral and lovely museum. Look for fine leather goods, jewelry and artwork. Excellent beef and seafood highlight the menus here.

    Days 10-11: Buenos Aires

Rivaling Madrid or Paris for sophistication and culture, the tree-lined boulevards of fashionable Buenos Aires are home to superb restaurants, art galleries, museums, the magnificent Teatro de Colon and the brightly colored houses of La Boca barrio. As the sun sets, Recoleta awakens and the passionate melodies of the tango rise from the milangas along San Telmo’s cobbled streets. Few cities in South America share the ambiance, lifestyle and amenities that make Buenos Aires so endearing.
